I just picked up some WWII era Japanese ammo. Included were some 7.7 with wooden bullets. Were these for training or some other purpose?
Thanks,
John

The 7.7 wooden bullets with rimmed cases were generally used for training with machine guns, although they were used in combat as some Vets have reported being hit by machine gun fire from wooden bullets. Rimless 7.7 wooden bullets are acknowledged as being used for propelling rifle grenades. Very nice find! Trey

Thanks for the quick reply Trey. Next question is when did the Japanese change over to the steel case ammo? I have some steel case on strippers as well as the brass case stuff. (Yes Shannon, I did get all of it)

I'll have to check, If someone else doesn't chime in. I'll try and have something on it in a day or so. Trey

Accord to Ken Elks' fine work Japanese Ammunition 1880-1945, steel case 7.7 ammo went in to production in 1944. Trey

Here's what the box looks like for T-99 steel case ammunition.

You're quite welcome! There are no other markings anywhere on the box. Odd that these are on the side instead of on the top. Box is undated.
