Guys: I found a relatively nice Type 38 made at Jinsen in 1940. I will post the pix later. Supposedly only around 10,000 6.5 mm Rifles were made there before the Type 99 started production.

I was hoping the real experts had some information on this rather hard to find weapon.

Mis-matched, crest lightly ground, minty bore, most of the finish is intact on the wood and metal, shows no signs of hard use. Returned to the US by Occupation Troops is where I think this one comes from.

Jinsen Bayonet installed!! Series 30 (MA) 99xx very late!!

PIX Later today, when I get to the camera!!

Dale

This series is believed to have been manufactured from approximately February 1942 through approximately September 1942. There were about 13,000 produced with the highest serial number reported being 12881.

Is there anything else you specifically want to know?

Frank: Why so late? Were they made along side the Type 99 rifles?

No, the Type 99s followed immediately after Type 38 production stopped to allow the line to convert to the newer rifle. Some production records/numbers from Jinsen reveal when the T-99s were manufactured. Pretty easy to back into the T-38 date. Jinsen received retired machinery/tooling from Kokura after they ended T-38 production in favor of the T-99 that also helps establish the dates at Jinsen.

Keep in mind that Hoten (Mukden) made Type 38s right through March 1944 or so and some of the Chinese t-38 copies were probably made right through 1945 and the end of the war.
