In the mid-80s a NC collector sent two photos of a late 27th series Arisaka in his collection. The rifle had no SN, a rope sling, but was on an earlier, apparently reject stock.

The photo of the right side is from the mid-rearband to the pistol grip while the left side shows the BP forward to immediately beyond the normal SN location. The rifle was mounted on a light-colored peg board and I'm assuming the holes in the board were 1`" apart, that's what the measurements are based on.

The right side of the stock has a broad 9.5"-10," "shallow V" shaped patch which extends from about 1" forward of the rear sight to about .5" forward of the receiver ring. The bottom of the "V" is centered on the recoil lug. The pach cuts through the fuller. The hand guard begins about 4" forward of the rear sight and is approx 5" long from the back to the rear band. The band, m'pod type, is one width forward of the normal position, the original stock hole is visable. It appears that the front, bottom of the stock is an addition, it is a tad deeper than the back portion. The rope sling may go through the bottom of the stock, the shadows are such it is hard to tell.

The stock has a wooden bp, and was inletted for a 2SRS, , a hole was drilled through the rear screw position for the rope sling.

This is an excellent example of a very-late war rifle, 11th+ hour, if you will. Hopefully the rifle still exists in this configuration and some newby hs not acquired it and attempted to 'make it right' by changing stocks!

Does your son still have the rope sling 27th that we traded for?
