Is the only difference between the 99 long and the short the barrel length? |

Basically, yes. But the front band is different, the AA wings are shorter and fatter and the butt plate is just a tad longer. Of course the cleaning rod is shorter too. riceone. _________________ Most people who preach tolerance are very intolerate. |

Thanks. And what do you suppose Vonmazur would have paid for said rifle? |

handguard on a 99 long does not go all the way to the front band.
here's a 99 long I scarfed from Riceone's pages, its missing the monopod (like most) but indicative of the overall look:
here's a 99 short rifle with monopod.
Rear sights are different, Toyo's to 1700 meters with fat a/a, Nagoya's to 1500 with fat a/a. Stock is a little longer in the wrist/butt portion than a 99 short, a little thinner in the wrist too. The long rifles are the most beautifully finished of the 99s.
As to what VonMazur would have paid for the rifle, only he can answer that. Its a nice rifle, I'd guess in the $400-$600 range. _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon! |

Due to over consumption of Saki, I cannot recall exactly, but it was in the range mentioned by Trey. These are nice guns and have always been my favorite Japanese Rifle, along with the type 2.....
Now that Graf sells the ammo relatively cheaply, I have loaded up two cal..50 ammo cans with US made ammo and stripper clips....

A pawn shop has a 99 long for $300. It's in good/very good condition, but it's school marked and has almost no bore left. I'd show a picture, but it's a long drive. Seem like a fair deal? |

I would guess that it is a training rifle, and not a production 99 long. So beware. Pictures would tell the tale though. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

I'm not sure. If I head back by I'll take pictures. I assumed it was a school rifle because it had a large character stamp on either side of the butt and no sign of a mum ever having been there.
I think it's time to buy a new book. |

That would be a trainer with no mum. Buying Fred's book, Military Rifles of Japan would be the best $45 for a reference book, you'd ever spend if you're going to get a Japanese rifle. His contact info is in the reference section. Good Luck, Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!
