Got a new Type 99 today, this one a Series 24. Got a couple of questions about this though.
First, the stock seems very unfinished, almost like cut with a draw knife. Posting a couple of pictures. Is this normal?

That is a beauty! 24ths have a lot of charisma. It's normal, it starts in the late 23rd series. We call that stock feature 'Chatter'...It is actually functional, it improves the grip if you're hands are hot/sweaty/bloody....Nagaya and sub-contractors used a 'spoke shaved' style chatter (looks like long draws along the pistol grip), and Kokura and sub-contractors used this style. This holds true on the replacement Nagoya and Kokura Type 38 stocks that I have seen. Nice looking rifle, I know you're proud, thanks for posting! Look forward to the datasheet. Thanks Trey! I do like it already.
I'm trying to fill out the data sheet on it, and so I'm attempting to carefully take it apart. Does the cleaning rod screw in? It doesn't readily come out, and (what I thought was a) button on the bottom of the stock doesn't push. Any idea what's going on there?
Also, this rifle has a middle band with monopod base and holes. Is that right?
Clearly I'm not done collecting or learning!
thanks,
Mark |

Ok. With a little more elbow grease (and a small nail through the hole), the cleaning rod screwed out. It's about 4 7/8" long.
thanks,

Time for another question on the data sheet.
#8 Receiver and Chamber markings
This rifle seems to be type A, originally. The mum has been completely removed. So, what should I select?
thanks again,
Mark
p.s. I'll post a picture of that too.

Sorry, was yard working....Mower quit, carb trouble, wife mad, when it rains it pours....
B rear band (monopod type, no monopod) is correct. Monopods were dropped late 23rd series. Rod screws out, use a 'springy' wire that will bend before it boogers the hole. The rod is more for stacking. That is an 'A' receiver, ground. Pretty gun. Thanks for your help. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

Thanks Trey! I have marked it so.
I have some other pictures, if you'd like to see some. Just say what you'd like to see.
