Does anyone know the approximate serial number /series range that they switched from the earlier 6 groove rifling to the later 4 groove??? |

I don't have good data on serial number ranges, however, reworks will quite likely be found with 4, even if earlier serial numbers. Below is from an earlier post on another board by Frank Allan...
"The actual date of the order to change the rifling from 6 L&G to 4 L&G was April 4, Taisho 7 (1918). I have seen several dates floating around but Shin forwarded me copies of several Japanese documents on this issue and both agree to the April 1918 date."
I'll check with Frank and get back to you. Thanks for posting. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon! |

I just got this from Frank Allan. Hope this clears the 'mud' up.
Quote: | I have looked over the spread sheets and data
sheets concentrating on rifles matched by the initial
matching system - ie not re-works. The earliest
rifles with the 4 L&G rifling are in the 1,670,000
range, but 6 L&G were being used as high as the
1,895,000 range. As Shin pointed out, the order came
in 1918, but it probably took a full year to impliment
and just to keep things really confusing, they
probably did some early experimentation. Frank Allan |
