I have an unusual Arisaka. Single piece, non-split stock; no serial #; no arsenal marks; crudely made; on receiver top instead of mum, there is a cloud-like balloon, inside of which it says "38" in Japanese; below the balloon there is a column of 3 characters, the first one-don't know, second means "field", the third means "type"; butt of the stock has "211" painted on the left side; the barrel appears to be non-rifled. What is it?

Sounds like you have a training rifle. The 'cloud' is actually a Flower, the an outline of a cherry blossom, it is normally associated with the Royal Family of Japan. It is a Type 'B' flower variation trainer according to Chip Goddard's training rifle datasheet. Trainers are very interesting rifles, and still quite affordable to collect. I should have a presentable trainer datasheet posted over the weekend. I'd appreciate it if you'd fill one out and send it in to Chip. He is in the process of finalizing a book on Japanese Training rifles. Thanks for posting. Trey Stancil

Fill out a Japanese Rifle Datasheet.
I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon!

You have a T-38 Shibata Type training rifle. The serial number is located on top of the upper wrist tang.
