Riceone's excellent shin dig was this weekend, a very pleasant get together, Here are some of the attendees and some pictures.

There were a couple of representatives of The
Alabama Society for the Study of Historic Oriental Lethal Equipment and Supplies there (namely the anorexically challenged, under tall one on the left......) and several other really nice people.

The nice people, (somehow the 'imp' snuck right in the middle).

Seated - Jim Allen & Roy Boone (MS), Ruth White (AL), Pete Snell (MS),

Collier and Alan Henderson, (TN) Bill Samson (MO), Garnett Stancil (Al), Jim Allen (MS), Ted Leonard (MS), Mark & Kathie Boone (MS), Sheryl & Bill Marchant (MS)

Ryan Henderson (TN), Marjory Boone (MS) Irene Samson (MO), Doss White (AL), Dale Grey (IL), Robert Yockey (IN), Steve LoLo Smith (AL), Mike Howard (IN)

Betsy Henderson (TN) Michael Stadler (IL), Trey Stancil (AL),
Conell Miller (MS), Don Yockey (IN) Phillip Jerguson (MS)

Not pictured: Bill White and Grace (AR), Archie Wade and Buddy (MS), John O'Hear (MS), Brent Greer (MS), Richard Lott and Steve Glisson (TN) Brad Baugh, Will and Beth Baugh (MS)

Thirty eight people from 7 states.

The Boone's were wonderful hosts, and everyone received some homegrown...rice for the trip back home. I highly recommend you make the trip if the Boone's decide to make this an annual event.

I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon!

The only 'bad thing' (other than the get together ending) was an accidental 'de cock' on a Type 38 Arisaka when working the bolt. When that happens, you have to disassemble the rifle down to the barrelled receiver, remove those 'pain in the Doss' screws that hold the bolt release and ejector (really tough to realign on a Jinsen), track down Mr. Boone and his magical vise, promise him half of someone elses collection, get him to knock out the trigger assembly, and remove the 'de-cocked' bolt. Afterwards, you get to put it all back together again, including the 'pain in the Doss' screws. So what did we learn? Don't de-cock (pull the trigger while closing the bolt) a Type 38 arisaka. I noticed two type 38 safetys with the 'lock block' sheared off, I wonder if this is what happens, when you decock a 38 and use brute force to open the bolt? The bolt locks in the receiver and you force the bolt out with a nice ball peen hammer and end up with an out of shape bolt and a sheared 'lock block' on the safety.

This past weekend as guests of the Boone family in Cleveland, MS. was great! My son, Trey, and I left Birmingham around 7 a.m. on Friday and traveled the 300 miles in about 6 hours, stopping several times. We thought for a while we were lost, but finally found the meeting place. It was a great location with plenty of parking, and a nice building. We only knew 5 of the people there, but by no time at all we were visiting with new friends as if we had known each other for years. There were lots of Japanese items, some very rare, and some I had never seen before. Also, other nations military items were on display and some items were sold. Margie and Roy Boone, and their children made everyone feel welcome. I think the longest travel came 700 miles from the north west. To the east one person came from the Ala/Ga line just north of Auburn. It was a really nice weekend that I hope we will have again next year. Did I forget to mention the food? Yes, supper Friday night was hamburgers and sausage made of deer and elk meat and lunch Saturday was 3 kinds of chilli along with lots of deserts. Doss hid the banana pudding until almost everyone else was gone and then ate it all! You missed a great time if you were not there!
