I have what I believe to be Japanese HMG Model 92 metalic feeding strip. I may be wrong about the model. It was sold to me with a storage container the smaller "cap" part of which is falling apart. It is basically cardboard held together by a glued-on cloth-like material. If I wanted to put this "cloth" back, which type of glue should I use? Any references?

I believe that is indeed a Type 92 tray and box. You might try a kid's glue stick, you can apply it exactly where you need it, it shouldn't stain, and should hold well enough for what you need it for. These also had paper labels across the seals. The brown one is marked 9 2 Type its 7.7 ammo and Kokura Arsenal, the white one is marked 3 year Type and Mukden Arsenal, I think and is 6.5 ammo. Trey

Wow Trey, that box was produced the same year the T-3 HMG was adopted! It is 6.5mm. Nice find!

Woohoo, my first post here ! Nice site going on here Trey, I need to lurk here more often.

In regards to the 30 round MG ammo case, the Hoten box is indeed for the Type 3 HMG, however strange it may seem the box manufacturer date (year 3) is not really the same year as the Type 3. The Type 3 HMG was incorporated into official status on the Japanese imperial calendar year of Taisho 3 (1914), and the "3rd year" you see printed as the manufacturer date on the box is actually the Manchurian imperial calendar year of Kotoku, of which the 3rd year corresponds to 1936. We have two different calendar systems being applied on this label, confusing ain't it ?

Edokko, thanks for clearing this up. If the ammunition was Taisho 3 dated, would you expect it to be round tipped bullets?

Incidentally, the majority of my crate of 92 ammo, is dated Showa 13.5 (my Dad was born in May of 38 ) so he's expressed interest in confiscating all those so marked. Trey

Trey, I need to look up my references when the Japanese military moved away from round nosed bullets to pointed bullets on the 6.5mm cart. Could have been after Taisho 3 but not sure.

Apparently, the round nosed bullets on the 6.5mm cartridges were dropped at the advent of the Type 38 in 1905, so it would seem logical that the Type 3 HMG used the pointed nosed bullets from inception.

Now that is interesting. I wonder if it were accuracy/ballistics related, as all the British 6.5 ammo from the 'teens' that I've got is round nose. That will give me something else to look for, early round nosed Japanese 6.5 ammo.......Thanks Edokko!

I think it was ballsitics related. The T-38 cartridges were improved considerably from the T-30 cartridges.
If you read Francis Allans new Early Arisaka book, it writes about original Japanese military documents that describes that with the advent of the T-38 cartridges and it's new ballistics, the old T-30 rifles had to have a modification on the rear sights to accomodate the new ballistics. So there was a significant change on the new pointy cartridge that came alongwith the T-38 rifle.

The pointed bulllets would be easily identifiable as being the new cartridges. Trey
