Here's what is identified in Fuller and Gregory's Japanese Military and Civil Swords and Dirks as a Type 2 Army Artillery Sword. They appear to be 1885/1886 patterns divided in to 3 Types, Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3. The Type 1 has a brass hilt and grips, ribbed on one side, the Type 2 has wood grips and steel hilt, and the type 3 has a wooden grip and brass hilt. According to Fuller and Gregory the kanji is (top) Tokyo Arsenal, (bottom) date of manufacture. I think this particular one is Meiji 20th year (1887). I don't see these that often. Its pretty neat.

I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon! |

Got this from Edokko, concerning the markings, pretty interesting, Thanks much Edokko!
Quote: | ...Yes, it is indeed a Meiji 20 (1887) manufacture at the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal, and the fuller being only on the one side is also correct I believe.
What’s kind of interesting are the inspection marks. The single encircled Kanji underneath the year of make looks like a “wa” as same as marked on the ricasso of early Tokyo made T-30 bayonets. And the mark on the reverse looks like the Kanji “suzu”, which is also seen on some of the mid range Tokyo bayonets on the crossguard underneath the muzzle hole, I wonder if they are somehow the same inspectors. The “suzu” would be a bit off age wise though I guess... |
