I have determine that I have a type 35 with missing bolt passed down to me. What bullet did the 35 shoot? Also, what bolts will work with the type 35?

The Type 35 was in standard 6.5 Japanese caliber (6.5 x 50), as far as I know, only a Type 35 bolt will fit in the action. There are two main type bolts, 1 without gas shield, and 1 with. I have pictures somewhere I'll have to dig up. Yours is about the 3rd one that was in need of a bolt in the last year or two. I don't know that anyone has found a bolt yet. Keep an eye on the auction sites for sporterized Type 35 rifles. You might have to buy a whole rifle just to get a bolt. Trey

How do tell the type 35 bolts apart from the other Japanese type bolts?

Correct me if I'm wrong Trey.... Very Happy (Cracks knuckles with arms fully extended)

The type 35 bolt is....
Polished, has a plumb shaped handle knob....(sounds like a type 99) Here's the big difference. The saftey knob is a hook type...I'm sure Trey has some good pics to show you.

How was that Laughing

Can you tell I'm very excited to be here.

Very Happy

Thatsa start. There are 2 japanese rifles with a "hook" type safety. The more common type 30 rifle uses a hooked safety, but it is thin and more hook like. The type 35 also has a hook per se, but the hook is much wider, less hook shaped, and checkered. It is more of a curved paddle than a hook. Only the type 30 is usually refered to as a "hook safety rifle"

If you can find a bolt, expect to pay $150 or more for it; less and you have hit the lottery.

You may have to buy a sporter rifle to get a bolt as stated before.

The online auctions are the place to look.

One50, thats a good start, here are some pictures of early (pre-production?) and late Type 35 bolts, early there was no provision for a gas shield to deflect gas from a ruptured case or other malfunction away from the shooters face. Later a gas shield was added, and the receiver milled out to allow for the protruding piece. Also early on, the flat of the hook on the safety was grooved. Seems like there was something else, but I cant remember.
Here are some pictures so you can see what we're talking about.

Type 35 Receiver marking.

Three production Type 35s

Three production Type 35 bolts showing safetys

Four Type 35s, bottom rifle is preproduction unserialized. It has no gas shield and a grooved safety.

Production checkered (left) vs. Pre-Production grooved (right) safetys

Preproduction (top-no gas shield) vs. production (bottom has gas shield) bolts

Early receiver (left) not notched for gas shield vs Production receiver (right) notched for gas shield.

There is also a difference in the cut out for the rear sight base under the handguard.

Unfortunately, I don't have an 02/45 to do compare/contrast on and compare to these features.

Thanks for the info. What is this rifle worth with the bolt? Also, is there better sites to find the sporters on? I have used gunbroker.com and http://www.auctionarms.com before.

keep on eye on gunsamerica.com and manions.com something might turn up there. I'm not up on prices for 35s, I'd guess $500-$1500 depending on condition, some might bring more. I paid $1900 for mine with proper Type 35 bayonet and early frog several years ago. I've seen a lot more of the rifles than the bayonets, although some bayonets have been trickling in from European countries in recent years. Trey

Thanks. Mine is probably lower to middle. Cleaning rod missing and no bayonet.
