Here are some of my grenades that were purchased from China. I made the sticks for the two type 98 grenades. The other picture is of a rare smoke (poison) grenade.

Wow, George, those are nice! If you need to 'age' the sticks, find a 7 year old headed for a camping trip......In fact, I have a perfect candidate in mind, I believe he could destroy an anvil if he was given duct tape, a screwdriver, and a little time. Seems like that runs in the family.
I got some sort of grenade for my birthday (I'm truly ordnance dumb) and a beautiful Aichi M6A Seiran Plane my Dad built from scratch out of wood and paper for me, I'll post pictures when I get a chance. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

Trey,
Believe me, the way that I finish wood, it comes with built in "aging"! Can't wait to see your things. I know that repros are not a good thing, but I may make some replicas of these two grenades. I won't try to deceive anyone, but it sounds like a good project.

Let me know how the repros come out, I'd probably be interested in 1 of each. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

I will do the "easy" one first. I have a foot or so of 2" cast iron bar stock. It is just the ticket for the heads. I made another "handle" today and got 6 more layed out. Three of the handles are spoken for, but I am getting pretty good at making them, so I could do one an evening with no trouble. I take it that these grenades are quite rare.
I have only seen two complete originals on Ebay in the last 5 years. The heads are showing up occasionally from China. There is also a repro coming out of China, but the handle is all wrong. My handles dimensions came from a real one. The Type B handle came from original Japanese blueprints.

Very nice work. Did you make the screw cap, or 'find' some that would work? _________________ 03man |

03man,
Actually, these caps are standard 38mm metal (wine jug) caps. I roll the lip off of the caps and put some heat to them to remove the white paint and this kinda aged the caps nicely. I am going to try my hand at spinning some proper caps. BTW: 38mm is the original size.

I got this down to about an hour per handle start to finish.. I learned today that my favorite relic supplier must have been ousted from Ebay. All his items are gone and he is no longer a registered member. Lets hope that he mailed my last item (Type 98B grenade head) before Ebay gave him the boot. He probably got the boot for not stating the standard "filled with inert substance" clause. Ebay is getting weird. I wish that there was just a militaria auction outlet with no stupid rules. _________________ Life Is For Service |

I got some strange notification from them a week or so ago, that they were restricting even more firearm/edged weapon related items. I don't remember 'Thou shalt not sell firearms or related items' being in that great big book of how to live your life. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

Here are my two relic grenades on either side of my first "museum quality" replica. My son come over today and helped me with the head. He is pretty good on the lathe.

I received the last type 98B head from China today. My son also located some schedule 80 steel pipe that is almost perfect for the type 98A grenade heads. Will have to do a little welding on the cap end, but it will be much cheaper to use. _________________ Life Is For Service |
