Hello all!
New to the forum, and also the Japanese "Model" 99. Actually, I'm still on the hunt for my first rifle.
My question is, what would be a good book containing some documentation on the changes from one series to another? I'm trying to find a decent 1939-1942 series, but I don't know what I'm looking for yet. _________________ Still trying to learn what I can, mainly about the Type 99 and Type 38. Welcome to the forum! The best book overall book on Japanese Rifles, is Military Rifles of Japan by Honeycutt and Anthony, followed by Japanese Military Rifles of World War II by McCollum.
Books dealing specifically with the Type 99 are the two editions of the Japanese Type 99 Short Rifle by White, White, and others, which has been recompiled and reprinted in updated form by White and Voigt. You should be able to get a copy of it from either lodestone@bellsouth.net or donvoigt@hotmail.com
There are at least 3 more that I'm aware of in the works now on the Type 99 and family.
The Type 38 and family are covered extensively, in Frank Allan's new book of the same name, its listed in the reference section.
I'd really suggest getting all of them, so you have read and digested the reference at hand when you run across something at a show. I felt really bad the time I passed up what I later found out was a $900 type 38 for $200, to buy a $200 Type 99 for $300, live and learn, I didn't pay too much, I just bought it a little too soon. _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

Great! Thanks for the recommendation. I just ordered the McCollum book you reference, since I could find it now. I'll keep an eye out for the others. _________________ Still trying to learn what I can, mainly about the Type 99 and Type 38. I have more curiosity than time, and more time than money. |

For added research material, Raymond and Martha LaBar will have a great book ready for sale sometime this month on Japanese bayonets. I have seen some of the proof sheets and I believe the book is going to shed new light on bayonet collecting. I have already ordered mine! |
