I came across a type 99 at a gun show this weekend that had an intact mum and all matching numbers, but also had a bolt handle that was curved or bent down so that it rested almost on the stock when the bolt was closed. The fellow selling the rifle swore that some of these rifles were manufactured with the bolt handle bent in this manner.
Could someone tell me if this is true? It had a knurled safety knob, so it wasn't a last ditch. |

If it were almost touching the stock, it has most likely been bent on this side of the 'pond'. 38, 97, and 99 Sniper bolts are turned down, but the bend is not radical enough to position the knob where it is almost touching the stock.
I've got pictures somewhere, I'll try and post them when I get a chance. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!
Fill out a Japanese Rifle Datasheet.
I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon! |

The sniper rifle bolt is left longer when mfg so when bent, it leaves enough space between the knob and stock to function.
A short bent bolt lies much closer to the stock, the guy with the story is just slinging BS to sell the rifle . It was not made that way by the Japanese.
This is a T97, the T99 sniper bolt is similar. The scope mount is my own design to allow firing a modern scope. _________________ 03man |

The bend in the bolt was much more crude than the one in your photo. I showed evidence of heating and the bend was made in 2 places. Thanks for your help. |
