What was the logic behind this series of serial numbers?

They were assigned in blocks, to simplify things for the bean counters (no offense to you bean counters!).

In a nutshell, the series mark is treated like the first digit(s) of the serial number, and specific series' were assigned to particular manufacturers and their sub-contractors.

Series 0, 0-99,999 = 100,000 rifles
0-99,999
Series 1, 0-99,999 = next 100,000 rifles
100,000 - 199,999
Series 2, 0-99,999 = next 100,000 rifles
200,000 - 299,999
.....
Series 20, 0-99,999 = next 100,000 rifles
2,000,000-2,099,999
Series 21, 0-99,999 = next 100,000 rifles
2,100,000-2,199,999
.....
This also allowed contractor and subcontractors to end up in their own ranges for the most part. Simultaneous production was going on at many Arsenals, whether with normal production runs, or contracted out production runs and by alloting each arsenal/subcontractor a specific series, and serial range within that series, it allowed for immediate recognition of where and who produced a certain weapon, and in higher series, shortened the number of stamping on each receiver by keeping it at a series mark and 5 digit serial number. It also might have served to confuse opposing forces intelligence folks about total # of weapons produced when captured weapons only had a 5 digit serial number and some crazy mark to the left of the serial number that didn't mean anything to them.

Well I also have a series 1 serial 49,614 I am sporterizing. (oops).

A ways back I wanted a stock from you but didn't want to spend the money. I should have. The bore is prestine, the bolt face too.

On the one I just got with the front sight deal... also has a ejecting
problem. The ejector it self hangs up in the slot. I see the mount where the bolt release is connected is a bit worn. I was thinking of milling it after welding it back up.

Any thoughts?
