Carl D. Strange is my Father who was on a LST during the later part of the war. He joined the Navy when he was 17 in 1945. I think that they were on there way to Pearl harbor when the surender was made. They visited many of the Islands like, Saipan, Solomons,Philappines, Okinawa, etc.
They also made 2 landing in Japan, one at Wakayama and one at Sasebo.
My Father also said that he went to see Nagasaki and it was really something to see.
Not long after that the US took all the guns off and gave the LST to the Japanese, so they could go and get there troops.
My Father then transfer to an APD and spent time in China and Vietnam, before getting out in late 46.
I have also had the Good fortune of meeting some of the guys who were on the boat with him. What a Great group of guys, If you ever get the Chance to talk with any of the vets, Do yourself a favor and Listen to what they have to say!
