Here is the receiver on a Mukden 0 series Type 38, it is from the early run, with no mum. Sort of looks like the mum has been neatly removed, and the receiver recontoured. If you look closely, you can see a couple slight remnants of the outer petals of the mum on each side.

This is an example of the confusion that is being seen in the reporting of Hoten/Mukden rifles. Many people would have reported this as not having a mum.
I think that many rifles were made without mums and they wnet to the Manchukuo National Army, but others were later made for the Japanese, also in the low serial numbered group, before they got to the 500,000 no series and then the 50th Series rifles.
The only way to pin this down is to get as many data sheets received as possible which carefully detial this situation.
