From Edokko:
Quote: | The writings on the tray is a Waka poem written by a mid to late 18th
century literature scholar named Norinaga Moto-ori.
It reads in Japanese, "Shikishima no Yamato-gokoro wo hito towaba, asahi ni
niou yama-zakura bana".
A direct translation is "If one asks what the Yamato spirit of Shikishima
is, the reply is as the scent of wild cherry blossoms in the morning sun".
The meaning being that "A true Yamato (Japanese) spirit should always have
the honesty and gentleness that would straightforwardly enjoy the beauty of
a wild cherry blossom".
During the war, this interpretation was distorted to mean "A Japanese soul
should be such as to be ready to fall for the country as cherry blossoms
will fall" |
Our thanks to Edokko for the translation! _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!
