Trey,
Have you defined the series and serial range when the stock screw slotted nut moved from the right side to the left?
Question
I believe it is in the early 2nd series, but looking for a closer serial range.

Thanks.

Yes, inquiring minds want to know! Smile
Thanks for asking 03!

Recoil bolt is one of the most mis-reported features. A lot of people don't report early rifles and frequently miss the orientation of the recoil bolt, if I had to guess, it looks to be in the 1st series between 40 and 55k. Trey

John, thanks for the update, I had your rifle reported with a 'B' style so that clears that up. Nut on right (bolt) side is Type 'D', nut on left side is Type 'A'. About 90% of the 60 1st series rifles reported are from Doss' early work on the Type 99 Short rifle and old style data sheets, in those days the majority of the sheets only had 'A', 'B', or 'C' on them. 16 of the 36 reported under 55k have something other than 'D' reported so its hard to pin it down exactly. Thanks for clarifying that. Thanks, Trey

I aint healthy enough to go digging in the safes and closets, but of the rifles I have out with my later stuff ,cause I been looking at them fer one reason or another...series 1 19820 has the slot on the right(bolt stem side) and series 2 19645 has it on the left.

Thanks Dave, there is a big gap between in the 1st series between 19k and 25k. I've been working on a list of 'gaps' in the data. Will try and get that finished up and posted in the near future. Have a few other things going on right now. Trey

Trey, my records show that I reported 1st series 94547 to you. I've since sold it but I'm pretty sure it had the nut on the right. I may have photos on my save discs.

I just looked up my photos & it does have the nut on the right, so that's a pretty high # 1st series with that feature.

Rob, I saw that when it got reported, that is quite likely an earlier stock, or someone swapped the recoil bolt around, I had a 2nd and a 6th series like that. Trey

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure the screws were still staked on it, but I no longer have it so I can't be 100% sure.

I doubt they arbitrarily told the stock guy "build stocks for rifles thru 55,000 with the bolt on the right and then go to the left" I expect they advised him of the change ,probably made to ease production, and they went the other way as the parts came available,I reall doubt they threw out or refitted stock that were ,well "in stock". they just fitted them to the guns so if a stock came out of the drop bins with the earlier pattern stock bolt they just put it in,its not like it was a major modification so Id expect the change will turn out to be random for a time in the late 1st series.JMHO dave
