I displayed Type 44s at Mr. Boone's, I neglected to get any of my own pictures, I posted what Mr. Boone took on the 'Rice Whine' post, I'll post them here again along with some others.

For the un-enlightened:
The Type 44 Carbines were accepted for production in 1911 (Meiji 44) for use by mounted cavalry troops. The design was a modified Type 38 shortened to carbine length, with integral mounted bayonet, and special butt-trap assembly for cleaning rods. A total of around 92,000 were produced, broken down into 3 basic variations based on the bayonet housings by collectors. Short, Transition, and Long bayonet housing configurations as shown below:
Top to Bottom:
Long (final) Variation
Transition (intermediate) Variation
Short (initial)

Early rifles experienced problems with accuracy and stock breakage due to the barrel float, and binding pressure of the bayonet housing, so the 2nd variation was developed and implemented. Someone had a 'mad on' and wanted to improve accuracy and breakage even further, so the third variation housing was developed and implemented.

Never seen a folding tomato stake, let alone 20. What good are tomato stakes when they are so short? Wink

If they were longer, you couldn't pick your nose on horseback.......Might be what happened to the 'esteemed gentleman from the Eva Area'.

I've got a helper than comes and goes as he pleases, hard to get a good days work out of him. I'd get on to him about it, but my Dad taught me to respect my elders (most of 'em anyway), wait a minute, my Dad's my helper, got to rethink this. Trey

Beautiful 44's Trey, one of my favorite Japanese rifles. I sadly only have one, battle worn and tired. The barrel is still good and has a full mum though.

This picture comes to mind when I think of it's history... Japanes troops retreating from Burma.

Thank you! I had gotten a copy and used it in my display once, but I've since misplaced it. If these old rifles could talk. What a story. Trey

Here's an odd one. Stock is a modified Mukden 38 carbine stock. Stock, rear sight, and mag box all have Mukden inspection marks. Odd bird. The buttstock is nicely fitted for the buttplate and inletted for the 'butt trap' under the butt plate for storage of the cleaning rods.
