I have a Type 44 carbine first variation that the mum looks like the bottom photo, I noticed that below the mum on yours it has what looks like a chiseled M. Mine is the same way. Do you have any information on the M mark?

The photo with the 'M' is of a Type 38 long rifle. The elongated 'M' mark is found on rifles for special issue to military reserve units, serial numbers are preceeded by 3 additional circles. I don't think I've seen an 'M' marked Type 44. I have seen them on Tokyo 38 longs, and Nagoya 28th series Long rifles. Trey

I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon!

The Type 44 I have has really been used a lot the left side of the stock is worn slick, the finger groove is all but gone except for a small area about a invh long by the lower band. It also appears to be school marked the mum has a over stamp and there are two zero's before the serial number, Thanks for the informatiom on the M mark i wasn't sure about it.
