The pictures are a real problem, but it appears that you have a Type 38 infantry rifle that has been cutdown near the rear barrel band. that ruins the stock and would be fairly costly to obtian a new stock plus the related discarded parts inorder to restore it to its original condition. The "mum" has been ground/defaced. The serial number, if it is indeed 6 digits, indicates that it was manufactured by the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal. It is chamber for the 6.5mm Japanese cartridge.
What else do you want to know?

I just noticed your serial number notation. My eyes are getting old. A better photo of the left of the receiver is needed to pin down the manufacturer and perhaps the series.
The little boy photographs well!!!!

Welcome to the forum! I'm running low on parts, if you haven't found the bolt parts that you need in a week or so, let me know, there is a shop nearby that has a safety or two, may or may not have the other parts. Be sure and download and fill out a type 38 datasheet for Frank and send it to him. Restoring a sporter can be very frustrating, but rewarding when finally complete. Patience, Luck, and Persistance are the keys! Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon! |

SKS, as you grow in this hobby you learn to save parts and never part with them. I see people selling firing pins, safties and such - they will need them some day and won't have them. I saved a T44 front sight back in the 60's and just used it couple of years back. Looked for a rear sight for a T35 for years. Finally gave up and made one, then last year saw one for sale in Finnland and now I have an original. You are beginning a wonderful hobby with lots of friends. riceone. _________________ Most people who preach tolerance are very intolerate. |

Roy is right on the money about this being a great hobby and it does have some great folks in it. A most helpful bunch.
I differ on the parts thing as I try to only buy rifles that don't need much in the way of parts - especially numbered parts. Sure, I need a cleaning rod here & there and will grab a pod if it comes along. But over time I've found it's best to buy the nicest rifles I can find with matching numbers and the original finish on the wood & metal. _________________ "A woman, a dog & and a walnut tree.
