How can you tell if your type 99 bring back had a duffel bag cut or was left intact ? Is the only way to tell by taking off the rear barrel band ?
How common was this practice ? Did some units allow for shipments without the cut. How was the cut done in the field ? |

A quick way is to grasp the forearm above the middle band and see if it will pull toward the front sight. If it does not move it still may have been cut and repaired. The only way to know is slide the middle band forward about and inch. riceone _________________ Most people who preach tolerance are very intolerate. |

Some rifles were made with 2 piece fore-ends and aren't really 'duffel cuts'. Most rifles with pinned/fixed front bands have factory 2 piece fore-ends. There are a few without (7th, 8th, 27th come to mind) 2 piece fore-ends but do have pinned/fixed front bands. As Riceone said, on most you can tell by trying to push the fore-end forward, if you have wiggle, its cut, otherwise, to be completely sure you'll have to remove the rear band. I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon! |
