I know I should have it checked by a qualified gunsmith, but is there any typical reason why you shouldn't fire a school marked rifle. This is a type 38. Everything seems to be in good working order. I bought it a while ago, and it would probably cost me more to have it checked out than I paid for it.

As long as it is a production type 38, with arsenal mark, serial number, type 38 markings and has/had a mum. It is probably safe to shoot. There is no substitute for having it checked by a qualified gunsmith, but make sure all bolt parts are in good shape and that there are no obstructions in the barrel or holes in the receiver, or patched holes in the receiver and you should be ok. You can always use the tire and string method for the first shot, then check the brass for any hidden problems. Norma brass will likely bulge a little but its undersized so no cause for alarm there. I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon!

Thanks riceone! I'll never listen to that Trey guy again Laughing

I will take it apart first. After reading that thread, it's pretty scary. Sabotage?

I have an older one (6-"groove" rifling) and found the bore was too oversize to shoot 0.264 bullets with any kind of accuracy. The slugs were skidding on the lands nearly a third of the way down that LOOOOONG barrel. I got a batch of 160gr 0.268 bullets and those shoot right into the black at 100 yards. I suspect many rifles were retired to school use when they became too worn (or oversize) to shoot well.
