I have one of the old 6-"groove" rifles. It slugs out at 0.270. Did the bores open up with use from erosion or expand slowly from the pressure?
I've started using Hornady 0.268 160gr bullets in it over IMR4831. It shoots great with them, but won't even stay on the paper with 0.264 slugs. I occasionally use it as my "backyard" rifle when I check on my property. The 160gr bullet at around 2400 or 2500 fps should deal effectively with any critter that has a bad attitude. |

I've noticed several that have 'expanded' from use I would expect, and some that were counterbored. Maybe someone else will chime in with something definite. I'm not much of a shooter so I don't keep up with ballistics and reloading. Sorry, Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!
Fill out a Japanese Rifle Datasheet.
I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon! |

The Japanese were having extraction problems with the Type 38 and, accordng to a U.S. military publication, a program was initiated by the Japanese to slightly bore out the chambers. I have not seen this publication, but it was reported by a reliable source. I have also not found any documents in the Japanese archives to back this up. However, I do beleive it, as so many bore measurements are larger than others.

That would account for a sloppy chamber, but what about the rest of the bore? |

The only thing that I can think of is excessive wear of the bore.
