What we have are consectutive Izawa 9th series rifles.
3996 and 3997 together again after 64+ years apart, sort of like long lost sisters, separated at birth. While they are consectutive, that are significantly different. Both have assembly numbers ending above the wood line (above left of recoil bolt) that are 21 digits apart #220 on 3996 and #241 on 3997. Which answers a few questions. More particulars later. If you have an Izawa 9th with a turned smooth safety 'E', is it turned smooth and flat | or is it turned smooth contoured ) ?
Note spliced stock on 3996 most notable at filled in cleaning rod cutouts on fore-end at barrel band.

What could be cooler? Tracking these down, and getting them back together. Do you carry a "little black book" with you on your travels, just in case something like this comes up? Or did you stumble across the 2nd one? You'll have to tell me what the differences mean, aside from assembled at different times.

This was purely by luck. I bought 3997 in May of 02 out of Ky. I stumbled across 3996 on a Friday night by accident on Auction Arms. Defuc had sent me a link to an auction on Gunbroker, it triggered something that made me go to Auction Arms. While I was there, I looked for something non-Japanese for my Dad, (he reads this so I can't give the exact sequence or exactly what). While looking for that sequence of words for the item for him, (that made me think of something related that is found on 9th series Izawa rifles), I decided to do an Izawa search. I'm sure glad I did.

When I saw the auction, I thought I had a match, but it had been a long day, I was tired and so I went to check... For once, I was right. The rest is history. I'm tickled. Spend a little time with your rifles, study them, think about them (heck, do datasheets on them) and you'll start making associations....
Quote:
Izzy 4 ser# 592 came from 'soandso' has a barracks cut stock, m/m bolt and dried rubberized canvas from a frog on the front band...paid $200 for 34th series 234 from 'soandso' when ground guns were $100 also has 'A' receiver...Jinsen 93k has all SLD features but an 'A' bolt release...Izawa 9 3997 exceptionally pretty last digit of ass# above woodline, got in KY with 8th series 88889 with 'A' style bolt....Jinsen 41k matching first Jinsen, bought from 'soandso' has bad stock, good metal...

The above is how I refer to these rifles when I think about them. Associations like that make it easier to keep track of what you've got. There are lots of others, some I know the exact number if its an easy number to remember (like, 5), and some just a range. Sometimes its just that number seems familiar which happened on a 38 safety that I needed and a ropehole TJK 27th that Doss reported. A few weeks/months earlier I had traded him a 37th with m/m 27th bolt, that matched the rifle he'd reported. I remembered it being 'close' and told him to check it, he replied not only was it close, it was a match! Also, it doesn't hurt to sit down and make a list and look it over from time to time. Trey

Thats A great story. I bet the odds of that happening very often are pretty slim.

I only have one, but I love it.
After a little tuning I've done 3-shot groups of less than an inch at 100 yards, using remington 100gr 0.310 round-nose bullets.

Thanks Trey! That's a fun incident, and probably rare. Though, I'm sure someone else has done the same sort of thing. It's interesting how different the two are, though separated by only a digit. Do those have cleaning rods?
I need to make a list of my serials, and keep them in my wallet, just in case!

Mark, no these were not fitted with rods, one of the neat things about this series, are the filled holes....

Trey, I noticed the filled drain (?) hole in front of the front action screw. Why did they bother? And they filled the cleaning rod hole too? That must be some interesting reasoning too.

Probably the regulations or requirements indicated that there would be no holes, so holes were filled and production continued according to regulation, it doesn't matter than it took x-amount of time to fill the holes, just that it was done to satisfy regulations...

3997 was sitting on the basement floor of a house in Kentucky in 2002 when I found out about it, I bought it shortly after seeing it and recorded the data off of it. I found out about 3996 when I stumbled across Auction 9005636 on Auction Arms about a month ago. As described in the previous post, nothing organized, orchestrated, sexy, nefarious, or complicated. Just plain dumb luck, being in the right place at the right time. Trey
