|

Newbie back again. Now that my move is over (6 months ago), I've gotten back to my fun Type 38, series 26. I've been shooting it, and finally figured out what the binding problem is. The extractor! This is a matching rifle with that exception. Any chance of finding the right extractor would be an exceedingly long shot, I know. Bolt and all other numbers are 679, extractor is 516. Probably changed during some unit "rifle-cleaning-fest" somewhere along the way? It shoots pretty good, with my first attempt ammo made from .35 Rem casess. I just wish the front sight was a bit higher so 100yd shooting would be in the scoring rings of my target. I'll post another pic when I remember how.
thanks,

Mark, Check for a number on the inside of your bolt release, I think the Kokura 26th series rifles matched to serial number and assemby number. I think the extractors match the assembly number. Type 38 bolts are pretty tight anyway. Make sure the tang screw coming up from the bottom isn't sticking up too far in to the upper tang. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

..since the bolt works easily when the extractor is off the bolt body. The lower tang screw isn't in the way at all. I need to find my magnifying glass, since I can't read that number. My son says it's 697. Would that be somewhere else as well? I found an old pic of that, and it's clearly 697. Now that my brain is in gear, that is the same number on the rear of the sight, rather than 679. Do you think that is just some assembly dyslexia?
thanks,

Frank's books shows Kokura 26th series' matching to last 3 digits of the serial number on bolt, safety, dc, and floorplate. Assembly number is stamped on bottom of receiver, bolt release, extractor, upper tang, lower tang, magazine box, barrel channel of stock and handguard, trigger and trigger guard. Front band and firing pin are not numbered. I guess the easiest spot to check would be bolt release or handguard. I'm going to guess that it matches and its just tight, do you have a dustcover on it that's binding? Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

No dustcover with this rifle, sadly. Unless someone has a correctly numbered extractor for this series, I guess I'll have to put up with it.
Not all of my numbers have been verified. With this sling on (and I can't figure out how to remove it) I can't get it out out of the stock. The handguard is numbered to match the rifle, as are both tangs and bayonet lug, all 679. Rear sight and bolt release are both numbered 697. I can't find a number on the cleaning rod. You don't think these are right?

This is Nagoya arsenal. At least I'm sure about that. Let me see if I can attach a pic of the serial. _________________ Still trying to learn what I can, mainly about the Type 99 and Type 38. I have more curiosity than time, and more time than money. |

Also the handguard has 679 stamped very legibly. Any chance an assembly number would be the same as the last 3 digits of the serial? How were those assigned? _________________ Still trying to learn what I can, mainly about the Type 99 and Type 38. I have more curiosity than time, and more time than money. |

That's a beauty! Nagoya 26th matches differently, they match to serial number. The rear sight uses a different assembly number than the normal assembly number located under the receiver. I don't know why I thought your rifle was Kokura. I guess because you said assembly number on the extractor and 26th series Nagoya extractors aren't numbered. So, you've been right all along, your extractor has probably been added if its numbered. Sorry for the confusion. As always, a picture is worth a thousand words (or 10 posts on a forum) Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

Thanks Trey! I only have 3 Type 38s thus far, and this one is my favorite. Not exactly sure why, other than the way it looks. It does shoot pretty well, but I haven't yet worked up a good load for it, and I have to figure out some better way to get a group on target. What do you think about that 679/697 numbering? Is that just what I called "assembly dyslexia" before? _________________ Still trying to learn what I can, mainly about the Type 99 and Type 38. The rear sight and bolt release will have their own, different assembly number that doesn't match anything else. The other stuff will match to the serial number. The bottom of the receiver and the barrel will have a different assembly number. The extractor should not be numbered. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

Thanks a lot for the help Trey.
So, since I have a numbered extractor, what arsenal/series should I be looking for? _________________ Still trying to learn what I can, mainly about the Type 99 and Type 38. I have more curiosity than time, and more time than money. |

Are you going to buy a rifle to go with the extractor?
Do you have a polished (bright) bolt finish? _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

Yes, I think I should! I need to find the rest of the rifle that goes under this 516 extractor. I guess I need to find a correct Nagoya extractor to replace it, too.
Yes, the bolt body is bright. The bolt handle was blued it seems, but not much of the blue remains. _________________ Still trying to learn what I can, mainly about the Type 99 and Type 38. I have more curiosity than time, and more time than money. |
