I can't picture what you're refering to, the front band is held on by a spring clip that is held by a small plate that is flush in the barrel channel of the stock and has a screw holding the spring in place. The band spring clips in the back of the front band. The nose cap (metal piece that the cleaning rod slids in to that sits flush with end of front band) is held on by the front band and a pin through the stock that can only be accessed when the front band has been removed. Sorry. I meant the rear barrel band retainer . Could I drive it out from the R side with a small punch?
RE: the type 30 data sheet, what is the interpretation of receiver marking I ?
Is there a mum at the top or is this character something else?
Referring to Assembly #s, what parts have them? I have found receiver, trigger guard, stock and bayonet lug
Regarding the bolt. Is it marked any other place than the handle?
Can't really buy a book for just one rifle so the forum has been an especially good reference.
Still cleaning. Thanks for the info and, Regards, Wilbur

Yes, I believe you can drive it out. I've also been able to carefully pull it out without using a punch. The problem with removing it is getting it to stay back in tightly.

"I" on the sheet does not have a mum. You will have the characters(3 10 Year Type) similar to 'I' immediately under the mum, on a normal type 30. The picture below is actually a 'C' (Tokyo Arsenal Overstamp on mum) but otherwise what you would find on selections "A" through "E". Selections "F" through "G" will not have mums.

Standard Type 30 receiver marking

Assembly numbers may be on the tangs (upper and lower), magazine box, floor plate, stock, and handguard, bolt handle, I'm not sure about internal bolt parts, I've never taken one down. No number on buttplate or cleaning rod. Looking forward to seeing it. Let me know if you have any other questions. Trey

Did anyone notice the Wilbur 46 checked the box for the "Kung-Hsu 31 Year Made" receiver top markings? Well he did. He also sent me a picutre of the markings to confirm this fact. It is typical of a PLA well worn rifle, but the characters are clear, although the dragon logo is nearly worn off.

Not too surprising is that the rear sight has been changed to a regular Type 30 early version.

This is the first Kung-Hsu 31 Year Made rifle reported since the publication of The Early Arisakas. The only known serial numbers are thus: 10608, 10731, 15804, 28113 and 28790. No additional Kung-Hsu 29 Year Made rifles have been reported, so the only known serial number remains 2754.

This is a great find. Congrats to Wilbur 46!

Frank

I noticed it, that's why I posted the picture of a normal receiver, and then never thought anything about it....Great find...
