Hal From CA sent these pictures that Seinen has identified it as a Shibata Trainer. Very nice rifle, Thanks for sharing!

I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon! |

These Type 38 Shibata trainers are somwhat uncommon. Less commonly encountered are the Type 99 short and long rifle Shibata trainer variants. Most interesting is the observation that the Type 99 short Shibata trainers were manufactured on modified Type 99 short service rifle stocks. All of the modified stocks I've encountered so far are Kokura Arsenal proofed.

Here are some photos of a Type 99 short Shibata trainer. As you can see, this one is mounted on a modified Type 99 service rifle stock. The monopod is a crude copy of the service type and is serial numbered to the trainer (734). This is the only example I've ever seen of a training rifle monopod.

That is really interesting. Just another of those little things that you might walk right past if you saw it from a distance... _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

Thanks for sharing and thanks for the education on these trainers. I know I would have not known what I was looking at if I saw one. |

Incidentally the bayonet is a Nagoya Arsenal, Type 30 bayonet.
Here is another batch of pictures....When I get around to it, I'll make a reference page.
