Hey guys
I'm new to the site, seems very well setup. I recently found an arisaka that's am really stumped on. It seems to be in a type 38 configuration but in a small caliper. No mum on the reciver instead another symbol. Can someone please help me out with this. |

Post a picture of the receiver, it is most likely a training rifle. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon! |

Pretty neat, that has all the features of the 7/8 Scale Child's Trainer!
I've never seen one with that receiver marking. Can you get a clearer shot of the receiver marking?
Here are the pics in one place.
Please fill out a trainer datasheet for Chip Goddard. I'll see if I can get him to drop by and comment. Thanks for posting. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

Still having trouble posting pics with my iPhone new photos are up on that link I provided prior. I used a last ditch 38 for comparison, seems the rifle in question is an inch longer and does fully function with a rifled barrel. Thanks Pete |

It's commonly called a 7/8th Scale Child's Trainer. That looks to be a very early one. Here are the rest of the pics. It fired short reduced charged gallery rounds and had a special bayonet. It was made to reduced scale to be easier to handle. They are pretty neat. I sent Chip an email, hopefully he'll be along in a bit...Be sure to fill out a datasheet and send to him.

Hey guys,
Sorry I'm late to the discussion. The trainer shown is a Nambu "7/8 Child's" trainer. The stock brand reads "3rd Public School" and the receiver marking is a logo designating ownership by that same institution. I once owned a 7/8 Child's trainer in the 23K serial number range that was marked in an identical manner. Hope this helps, but feel free to pose additional questions.

Thanks guys this really helped. I have a couple more questions. First how hard would it be to find a bayonet for this and what do they look like? Second what caliper ammo does this take? Should I remove the shilack from the stock? And finally for my own piece of mind what is the general value of the rifle? Thanks guys |

Bayonets are a lot harder to find than the trainers. Expect to pay $350 to >$500 for them, depnding on the variant (three are known). The trainer shoots the 6.5 mm so-called gallery round. I have no idea what "shilack" means. Can you clarify?

If it were me, I'd leave the clear coat as is. Hard to say what the wood condition might be underneath it. Values on these run $150 to $200. They're by no means rare. Over 80K were made and survival rate was high. The bayonets are another story.

Thanks guys
This was in a deal with about 10 other arisakas and k98s. The previous owner and I both put a high value on it due to the lack of knowledge. I ended up paying around 400 for it. Oh we'll live and learn thanks guys. |
