Looking for some info on a recently purchased rifle. Appears to be a Mauser in appearance, but has Japanese or similar markings and a dovetailed 2 piece stock. Also has a unique dust cover that slides forward and back between the bolt handle and the rear sight. The dust cover does not travel with the bolt.
Any help or information would be appreciated... |

Rickashay, Welcome to the forum! Sounds more like a Siamese Mauser, take a peek at the Siamese Rifle datasheet here.
It is included below for quick reference if you don't have a .pdf reader.
As always, pictures are most helpful in rifle identification. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!

I didn't pay to much for that old Arisaka, I just bought it a little bit too soon!

I went to find a decent Siamese Mauser picture and couldn't find one. So here are some until I get a chance to make some better ones. Shown with dust cover in place, over breech. This is the Type 46, (designed for the Type 45 cartridge, but rechambered for the Type 66 Cartridge later, sight ground down). The Type 47 is the carbine version.

Thanks for the welcome and the info. Bingo...you guys identified it.
I am impressed, you guys are amazing. Now I know what I have, and the data sheet will be very helpful for "reading" the symbols on the rifle. I knew they appeared to be oriental, but they didn't seem to be Japanese.
Thanks again....hat's off to ya. |

Will do...does Frank have an email address? If so, I can scan and email the data sheet to him, otherwise I will just mail to the address on the form. |

Please do fill out a data sheet on your Siamese Mauser. I hope to re-write the small booklet I published soooo.. many years ago on these rifles and carbines. All new information is appreciated.
Since your rifle has a two-piece stock it is particularly interesting. If you take the action out of the stock for a thorough cleaning, can you please record all markings under the receiver and with in the barrel/action channel of the stock and handguard. One marking that should be there is the original assembly number that will probably consist of a Japanese character followed by a one- to three-digit arabic number.
I appreciate your interest and help on this researh.
My e-mail is as Trey stated: fcallan4647@yahoo.com (edited email)

I hate it when a computer thinks that it is smarter than we are. My e-mail address is:
the(followed by ONE underlined space)allans(followed by one underlined space)fcla@yahoo.com
Computers like to underline the entire e-mail address for some reason.
I hope that this helps.

Frank,
I have been traveling and have not yet had time to complete the data sheet to return to you. I also have not yet had time to disassemble the rifle. As soon as I am able to get some time, I will get the data sheet completed and sent to you. In addition to the rifle, I also have the correctly marked bayonet, but not with the matching serial number.
Would you or anyone else possibly be interested in purchasing the rifle? I have no idea of the value with the bayonet.
Thanks for all the assistance on this item. |

Rickashay, get some good pictures of it and the bayonet and post a for sale or list it on one of the Auction sites. I don't think I'd take any less than $250+ shipping for the rifle and bayonet. I think its probably worth more (hard to price something unseen) but unseen, $200 for the rifle and $50 for bayonet is reasonable starting figure. If its is still in the original caliber, it will probably bring more. Trey _________________ Subscribe to BANZAI!
